Breaking news is a television or radio news story that occurs so rapidly and urgently that it requires the interruption of regular, non-news programming (and sometimes, even of network affiliates’ regularly scheduled local newscasts). Until 24-hour news networks came into existence, breaking news was typically only used for highly significant events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and weather events such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes, which required the entire nation to interrupt programming and provide immediate, long-form coverage. This type of programming is usually referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special report.” When these events occur, the newscast may be interrupted with a countdown sequence and an opening graphic that identifies the source of the breaking news. A lower third alert may also be displayed.
