When an urgent news event occurs that requires immediate nationwide coverage, a station will usually interrupt its regular programming and break into a special report or “Newsflash”. [4] The national network may then alert its affiliates to stand by and then pause its feed to allow any affiliated stations to switch to the special report. The station’s own newscast typically then resumes, with a special ticker or lower thirds identifying the breaking story being followed.
