Trending is a section of Current News that talks about what is happening in the world right now. This section is updated regularly. When a breaking story occurs that requires immediate coverage, television and radio networks interrupt regular non-news programming or their network newscasts to cover the event. A distinctive graphic and music cue are usually used to signal that the newscast will resume. The broadcaster may also use a countdown sequence to allow any affiliated stations to switch over to the national feed and join the break in progress. Until the advent of 24-hour cable news channels, such interruptions were rare and reserved for events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which demanded nationwide coverage and forced numerous stations to interrupt their programs.
