Breaking News is a broadcast news story that requires immediate attention and warrants the interruption of regular non-news programming or, in the case of network newscasts, a pause to allow affiliate stations to join the feed. Often, the breaking news report is augmented with analysis by experts in-studio via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means. The report typically begins with a countdown sequence, followed by an opening graphic and distinctive music cue. Newsflash and Special Report are other terms used to describe the same type of coverage. The need for cutting-ins during regularly scheduled programs has diminished with the advent of 24-hour news networks.
