In television and radio news broadcasting, breaking news is when a significant news event occurs that requires the immediate interrupting of non-news programming (or, in the case of network news, regularly scheduled newscasts). During this time, an alert graphic and lower thirds typically appear, and the station identification is overlaid over the top of the broadcast. Breaking news events are sometimes followed by a special report, which may last only minutes or, depending on the severity of the event, may run for hours and days. Prior to the existence of 24-hour news networks, such programming interruptions were only used for very urgent stories such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy or severe weather events.
