Breaking news is live television coverage of urgent events that compel a station or network to interrupt regularly scheduled programming (or, in the case of 24-hour news channels, to stop their pre-existing non-news program). If a breaking news event is large enough that multiple stations must break away from their regular programming at the same time, the national networks will usually alert their affiliates and tell them to stand by for a special report to begin. This is often accompanied by a countdown sequence and an opening graphic with a distinctive music cue.
