A Breaking News report or Special Report is an interruptive broadcast on a television news program that deals with a story of urgent, widespread interest. It is commonly used for severe weather events or for other news that requires immediate attention. Until the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking news was very rare and usually limited to a major event such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963, or a nationwide natural disaster. When such an event occurs, a national network usually pauses its regular non-news programming or interrupts its own newscast to offer the report. Local stations often use their station imaging promos or lower thirds to inform viewers of the change in programming.
