About Trending
When an event occurs which warrants breaking news coverage, the national network will interrupt any regularly scheduled non-news programming, or, in the case of some 24-hour news channels, may pause a live newscast to allow affiliate stations to join the feed. The network will then display a graphic, usually accompanied by a distinctive music cue, that informs viewers that current news coverage is available. The network may then begin to report on the event through a news anchor in-studio, or may include analysis through a network feed. In some cases, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, the breaking news reports may last for several hours or days.
