Current News is a term used by television networks to describe the interruption of regularly scheduled programming in order to report breaking or late-breaking news. Historically, programming interruptions for breaking news were limited to stories that were considered extremely urgent (such as the death of an important political figure) or events that threatened lives and property, such as severe weather, but modern networks have expanded this practice to cover a much broader range of news stories.

A newscast or program that has been interrupted by a breaking news story is typically given a pause during its normal programming to allow affiliate stations to join the feed, with an opening graphic and voiceover introducing the breaking event. A network may also notify all of its affiliates using an internal alert service.

After the newscast is re-joined in progress, an opening graphic and voiceover will again introduce the breaking news. A reporter or a cameraman will usually be on location during the story to add additional details about the event.

During the coverage, lower thirds and other graphics may be changed to convey an urgency to viewers. The anchor may introduce the story with a disclaimer, such as “more details will be shared later”.

If the story has been covered extensively, a local station may have the opportunity to break away from the network’s feed and begin its own evening newscast. The station may do this for a short period of time, as it can help to fill time if the breaking story is significant or if the local network is low-rated and does not have a lot of other programming airing in the timeslot.
