Trending is a breaking news story that is currently being discussed on social media. When a trending story hits the wire, stations often interrupt regular programming to cover the story and may even pause network newscasts in progress. This is known as a “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. Breaking news reports are also known as “Alert crawls” and “Cut-ins.” Prior to 24-hour news networks, such interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent and significant events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, requiring nationwide coverage and forcing multiple stations to stop their programming for lengthy breaks. Newsflashes and Special Reports are sometimes accompanied by an altered lower third and distinctive music cue.
