What is Current News? What is the difference between breaking news and current events? The difference between breaking news and current events is mainly in the use of the term “breaking”. Originally, breaking news referred to events that happened in a specific time period, such as the August 2017 North Korea crisis, but the 24-hour news channels have diluted the term’s meaning. In many cases, breaking news refers to a story that is happening in real time and has a wide appeal to viewers. In some instances, breaking news has been used interchangeably with “special report” and “news flash” for the same story.
On the other hand, current events are often referred to by their headline, which is the major story of the newspaper, usually in the centerfold of the paper. This headline is meant to catch the attention of potential buyers. While breaking news may be interesting, trending news is more reader-focused. Often, stories trend because they generate lots of web-page hits. They are often less impactful on society as a whole. So what makes Current News so popular?
Breaking news is often interrupted by new programming and highly-rated shows. Likewise, breaking news can disrupt highly-rated programs and shows with plenty of time to air. A recent example of a network-produced episode interrupting a popular program is ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike. Local newscasts can either interrupt their regular programming, or join the “extended edition” of the program, depending on the type of news.
