The term “breaking news” is used to describe a story that is happening at the moment and is considered “breaking.” This term is sometimes used to refer to stories that are of wide public interest, but are not yet confirmed by a news organization. For example, breaking news is a story that occurs in a foreign country, such as a bombing in the Middle East. Alternatively, “just in” is also used to refer to breaking news, but that term is less often used today.

Breaking news is usually a break in regular programming and can interrupt a program, particularly a highly rated show with time left to air. ABC broke its own story April 2017 with the launch of a missile that exploded over a Syrian village. While the event itself may not interrupt prime time programming, it can disrupt a highly rated episode of Scandal. Hence, local affiliates can inform their viewers of upcoming interruptions.

Special Report refers to a daily news show that is sponsored by CNN and the Fox News Channel. The former launched a political affairs program, “Special Report with Bret Baier,” as a special hour during the impeachment proceedings of President Bill Clinton in 1998. It later became a permanent title. The former also uses “Special Report” as a catch-all title for documentary library programming, including true crime.
