Whenever a news story breaks on television, radio or online, it’s referred to as “breaking news.” This term is used to describe the most important story of the moment. It may be a live event or a story from the past. Oftentimes, the term is used interchangeably with “late breaking news.”
Breaking news refers to a live event, such as an earthquake, hurricane, or election. It’s also used for news stories that are of wide interest to viewers. A breaking news theme is used to emphasize the urgency of the news and to give a sense of anticipation.
When a news story breaks on television, radio, or online, the network talent will begin to introduce the story. The story may be relayed from the location of the breaking event, or the network may pass the coverage along to a reporter at the station. The coverage may also be passed through an internal alert service.
If a story is breaking during prime time, the network may interrupt programming. Some networks will even allow local stations to break away from the network feed. This can be a good way to increase local story volume.
Another way that breaking news is used is during an overnight news program. Networks will often provide a live shot of the anchor. This will serve as a reminder to viewers that the full story will be aired on local news.
When the network’s coverage is over, it will likely resume previous programming. This may include commercial advertising, or it may not.
