Depending on the network, breaking news may or may not interrupt programming. The network may continue to broadcast a live shot of the anchor, or it may revert to the newscast as soon as the coverage is over.
While the breaking news may not necessarily interrupt the programming, the network may have an internal alert service that disseminates information to the affiliates. Depending on the length of coverage, the network may also suspend regular commercial advertising to ensure that the coverage is as thorough as possible.
In addition to the “breaking news,” networks may also integrate analysis of the story. For example, the United States presidential election of 2016 included candidate debates, as well as inaugurations for the winners. This type of coverage is usually followed by an outro promo directing viewers to the network’s website or other media channels.
While a breaking news announcement is typically the most important of all, the most significant news may be the one that doesn’t get airtime. This can be a story that lasts only a few minutes, or it may be an event that lasts a couple of days.
