When a breaking story occurs that is so urgent that it requires an immediate interruption of non-news programming, or in some cases of long-form newscasts, the broadcaster will notify its affiliates to “stand by.” The network will then begin an audio countdown sequence, which gives affiliated stations time to switch over and join the feed. After the countdown, a news anchor will welcome viewers to the newscast and then break the news story at hand. The newscast may use special graphics and a distinctive music cue to convey a sense of urgency. In recent years, some major networks have begun using a “Special Report” ticker during regularly scheduled programs, lessening the need for cut-ins or other special break reports.
