Breaking News is a news segment that follows an event that is developing or has occurred. It may interrupt regular programming (or, in the case of nationally broadcast network newscasts, a pre-scheduled report), or it may be used to supplement a current program’s coverage. In the days before 24-hour television news networks, programming interruptions were reserved for extremely urgent events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, for which an entire network would break away from its scheduled programming. Typically, breaking news segments include an opening graphic and a distinctive music cue.
