Current News (sometimes referred to as breaking news) is the reporting of an ongoing news event that is of interest to the general public. This could be a major incident or it could be a story that is of a lesser magnitude but has been widely covered by the media.

Breaking news coverage usually lasts a few minutes, though sometimes it can be several hours or even days long. It may include a live video feed, or it may involve interviews with people involved in the story. It may also include analysis of the information by analysts in-studio or on telephone, satellite, or broadband (B-GAN).

Special reports and breaking news events are common on television and radio. Some networks, such as ABC and Sky News, have a dedicated “breaking news” program. These programs are often more informative than their usual programming.

Coverage typically begins with a special opening graphic, featuring music and/or other visuals. This is normally accompanied by a voiceover from a network anchor introducing the special report. This may be followed by an interview with a reporter at the scene of the event, or it could simply be an image of the breaking news.

In some cases, local stations are given the opportunity to break away from the network’s feed and begin their own evening newscast. This is a process that is often set up by a brief cue from the network’s talent that they will pause for a few seconds to reset the coverage, at which point an opening graphic might be rolled again.
