Breaking News is the term used for current events that require a national network to interrupt regular programming to report. In North America, a station usually stops normal programming and starts broadcasting a special segment called “Newsflash” or a “Special report,” or both. This type of reporting is more common at 24-hour news networks and is usually done when a significant event occurs that is deemed to be important enough for the network to interrupt regular programming. Typically, the network will alert its affiliate stations to “stand by” and then count down for them to switch to the network feed. In addition to a news story, the report often includes lower thirds and other graphics that convey a sense of urgency.
