Trending is a section in Current News that talks about things that are currently popular or relevant. It’s usually a short segment that can last minutes or hours or days depending on the story being covered. Trending segments can include anything from a presidential tweet to Tiger Woods’s legal battle to the latest in the Mueller investigation. Often, when Trending is breaking news that warrants an interruption in non-news programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts) a countdown sequence will play followed by a special graphic and distinctive music cue. Alternatively, a “Newsflash” or “Special report” ticker may be used.
