Breaking news is an announcement of a current event that is deemed to be so important and urgent that it requires interrupting regular non-news programming, or even, in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts. This is most often done in the form of a newsflash or a special report, and it can include a countdown sequence to allow network affiliates to join the feed. A news anchor or reporter then introduces the breaking story, and the lower third graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Before 24-hour news networks became popular, such breaks were usually reserved for highly important events requiring nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1963.
