Breaking News is a term that describes the process of interrupting non-news programming on television or radio in order to report an urgent news event. The news event may be a natural disaster, crime, terrorist attack, or other major world events that require immediate attention. The breaking news is normally reported by a network news anchor. If the story is a breaking news event that requires immediate national coverage, the network will usually alert its affiliates to be ready to interrupt their normal programming and will run a countdown sequence to allow affiliated stations to switch to the network feed. Often, the breaking news is announced through a graphic accompanied by a distinctive newsflash or special report sound effect.
