Current News is a type of journalism that reports on recent events. It may be about global, domestic or local issues. It is sometimes called a breaking news story or a special report.

Breaking news, also known as “late-breaking news,” is a term used by broadcasters to describe a story that warrants the interruption of current non-news programming to report its details. It is most often assigned to a story that has widespread impact on the lives of the people involved, but it can also be assigned to a story that is being reported live or one that is of little interest to most viewers.

On television, a breaking news event usually begins with an opening graphic and voiceover announcing that the network will be covering the event. This is followed by an anchor or reporter introducing the news. The anchor or reporter then goes on to introduce the story in detail, describing what happened, where, and when.

If the event is national in scope, the network will then alert all its affiliates to stand by. This can be done through a network’s internal alert/message service or an external service (such as NBC’s Pulse of Events), and the newscast will then begin to pause to allow any affiliated stations to switch to the network feed.

If the story continues for a significant period of time, network and local newscasts may be interrupted to join the coverage, which may then last for hours or days at a time. This coverage is usually accompanied by in-studio analysis from the network’s analysts and if available, a live link to the location of the event.
