A breaking news story is an urgent or highly important piece of current non-news reporting that warrants the interruption of regular programming (or, in some cases, regularly scheduled newscasts). When a breaking story occurs that requires national coverage and immediate attention, the network’s feed will usually go to a countdown sequence while the station imaging promo or lower third graphics are changed to indicate a special report is on the way. Breaking news reports may be brief or prolonged, with some stories requiring several hours of continuous coverage to fully develop. Historically, newsbreaks were reserved for extremely serious events that required nationwide coverage, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963.
