Breaking news is an urgent event or story that warrants immediate news coverage. The story can involve an ongoing terrorist attack, a natural disaster or any other event that requires a live interruption of regular programming. A network may alert its affiliates of the breaking story, often with a countdown sequence, and request that they interrupt their current non-news programming to switch over to the network feed for special coverage.
