Current News, formerly known as Breaking News, is a type of television or radio programming where an issue is considered to warrant interruption of regular non-news programming in order to report on the details. This coverage may be continuous, a short segment (usually less than 20 minutes), or multiple hours or days at a time, depending on the severity of the issue and the amount of time it takes to cover it.
The process of breaking news usually begins with an opening graphic and voiceover announcing the news. It is followed by the introducing of a news anchor who welcomes the viewer and introduces the story at hand. Lower thirds and graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency.
Breaking news often ends with a disclaimer letting viewers know that they should check out the network’s news division website for further details and information as the issue unfolds. Occasionally, it is followed by an announcement of the next program to air.
If a local TV station is involved in the story, it might take over for the network. This is usually a choice made by the news director of the station.
During breaking news, the television broadcaster will normally alert all of its affiliated stations via an internal alert/message service telling them to stand by for the interruption. They are then usually given a reverse countdown to allow them to switch to the network feed, typically from 5 seconds.
