When a breaking news story occurs that is so important or urgent that it warrants an immediate interruption in non-news programming (or, in the case of a 24-hour news network, regularly scheduled programming), a broadcaster will typically interrupt regular commercial advertising with a special segment called a “Newsflash” or “Special report.” The news event may also prompt a lower third or other graphic to be overlaid on the screen.
