Breaking news is a catchall term that describes any news that is “breaking” at the time of publication. While this term has a wide variety of definitions, its most common usage is to refer to a story that is happening live. A special report or a news flash can be considered breaking news. Some news outlets may use this term interchangeably with “breaking news,” such as in the case of news about the North Korean nuclear crisis.
Breaking news can interrupt popular television programs during prime time, disrupting highly-rated shows with time to air. In one such incident, the April 2017 missile strike on the US city of Shayrat interrupted a Scandal episode. Broadcasting companies have also found ways to incorporate breaking news during prime time. For instance, a national network newscast might pause for a few minutes to allow other network affiliates to join the feed. A newscast may also alter the lower third to create a feeling of urgency.
