The major news networks have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in their streaming operations. They have high hopes for streaming news.
Streaming news has proven to be a hit with both mainstream and niche audiences. In fact, more people watched streaming news programs than watched broadcast TV. This is because streaming news delivers news on demand.
Streaming news has also allowed for more efficient building of news libraries. Rather than spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build new television stations, networks have invested in streaming operations. It has also enabled networks to archive content. This has enabled the major news networks to repurpose programming from their broadcast feeds.
In the United States, cable television has been a long-standing and profitable business. But cable’s style of broadcast news left viewers waiting for the news wheel to turn. They had to match the programmers’ clocks. They also avoided news that challenged their beliefs.
Cable TV gave viewers a variety of choices, but it also fed polarization. This created kindling for new innovators. With a multiplicity of choices, some viewers may opt not to pay for cable news, or may switch to a different channel.
