Current News is a term for breaking news events that require interrupting of non-news programming, and often the network feed of national television and radio. These events can be as simple as a tornado warning or as serious as the assassination of John F. Kennedy. When such a story occurs, stations will usually interrupt their normal programming with a Newsflash or Special Report graphic and alert crawl. They may also alter lower thirds and other graphics to convey a sense of urgency. Breaking news reports were rare until the advent of 24-hour news channels that have an anchor available to interrupt live for breaking stories at any time.
