A breaking news story is an event that elicits nationwide coverage, necessitating the interruption of non-news programming (or in some cases, regularly scheduled network newscasts). When a breaking news story occurs, the national network feed will pause and then switch to a countdown sequence to allow station affiliates to join the feed. A distinctive graphic open, typically with a special music cue, is then shown, and lower thirds and other graphics may be altered to convey a sense of urgency. In the past, this type of break was commonly known as a Newsflash or a Special Report.
