A breaking news story is a news event that is occurring now or is about to happen. This type of event is often reported in a brief segment or special report and may cause the network’s regular newscast to be interrupted. Before 24-hour news networks were commonplace, programming interruptions were usually reserved for very urgent events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, as well as severe weather such as hurricanes and tornadoes that require immediate action or potentially life-threatening consequences.

Depending on the severity of the event, breaking news reports may last only a few minutes or continue for hours and even days. During such extended coverage, the network will generally integrate analysis about the event from analysts in-studio via phone, satellite, broadband (B-GAN) or other means. Network affiliates will often insert their station identification in the form of a top-of-the-hour overlaid during the breaking news report. This method is less disruptive to viewers than the use of cut-ins in which a scrolling alert is used during non-news broadcasts, such as sports or entertainment programs.
