Breaking News
When an event happens that warrants the interruption of regular, non-news programming on a television or radio station, it is called breaking news. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such events were typically reserved for extremely urgent news such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy; however, in recent years, breaking news coverage has been incorporated into regularly scheduled news programs on network affiliates as well. In these cases, stations are usually notified in advance and asked to stand by while the newscast is interrupted, and they will be able to join the network feed for breaking news coverage as it develops.
A news anchor then usually welcomes viewers to the program and introduces the breaking story at hand. In some cases, the breaking news will last only a few minutes; in others it may continue for several hours or even days as ongoing coverage is developed and integrated into the newscast.
