Breaking news is a breaking news story that requires immediate national coverage and that would necessitate an interruption in non-news or regularly scheduled network newscasts. When a breaking news event occurs, the broadcaster will alert all affiliated stations to “stand by for an emergency break,” or may start a countdown sequence that will allow the affiliates to switch to the network feed at the appropriate time. A special graphic and a distinctive music cue are typically used to announce the break. The network may then interrupt the regular newscast and halt commercial advertising in order to provide full coverage of the event. The break may last for only a few minutes or longer, depending on the nature of the story.
