Breaking news is a television news story that is so significant, important, or urgent that it interrupts regular non-news programming, and requires the network to alert its affiliates. When this happens, the broadcast will pause for a moment, and then display a special graphic that states that a breaking news story is about to be discussed. In many cases, the network will also display a countdown, in order to allow its affiliates to switch over to its breaking news feed.
The breaking news is then presented, often by a live anchor. In some cases, the report may be followed by a segment of commentary or analysis, based on the information being covered. Lower thirds may also be modified, to create a sense of urgency.
