Breaking news is a television or radio news story that occurs so quickly and with such impact that it warrants an interruption of the original programming for immediate coverage. This is more common with 24-hour news networks, which have a live anchor ready to interrupt regular non-news programming and provide coverage of the breaking news at any time. Prior to the existence of these networks, programs would be interrupted for breaking news only when it was of extreme urgency such as the assassination of a President or other national event that required immediate nationwide coverage by multiple stations. The term is also used to describe urgent weather events such as tornado warnings or landfalling hurricanes, which may require a complete interruption of regular programming. [4]

The break is usually announced by a short countdown sequence on the screen and by an audio cue. Often, the network feed is rebroadcast by affiliates to give local viewers their own version of the report.
