For decades, TV news has dominated the airwaves. As cable TV began to emerge, it grew more popular and one-upped broadcast news. With cable, news was linear and delivered on a set of clocks.
Then, streaming came along. It offered viewers the ability to view news in real time, no matter where they were. Streaming also helped news organizations realize that there was a sizable audience for news.
Cable news networks saw an opportunity to compete with streaming. So they started investing hundreds of millions of dollars into their streaming operations. They hoped that their streaming strategy would give them a technological edge over the streaming competition.
Fox, MSNBC, and CNN were already in the business of producing news. But they were criticized for not attracting enough viewers. Even after the launch of their news-streaming operations, they repurposed programming that was already on cable.
In the future, online video will likely reshape political news coverage. New overtly political news operations are expected to enter the market. Online video streaming will not be subject to costly negotiations with cable companies. This will allow new players to enter and compete for viewer attention.
In 2022, CBS News will beam 45,000 hours of local news to streamers. In addition, ABC News Internet Ventures will produce 10 hours of content a day. All three networks earned a combined profit of $3 billion in 2020.
These networks have taken advantage of the increasing number of people using streaming to provide current news. They have also created documentaries, news analysis, and reruns.
