When a news story occurs that requires immediate, nationwide coverage and prompts an interruption of regular, non-news programming (or even regularly scheduled newscasts), the network will usually interrupt with a breaking news graphic, with a distinctive music cue. This will often be accompanied by a countdown sequence to allow the network’s affiliates to switch to the breaking news feed. If the news event is particularly severe, the national network may also integrate analysis from experts on-air or in-studio. Before 24-hour news channels, such breaks were typically reserved for extremely urgent or important events, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted nationwide coverage that compelled many stations to interrupt non-news programming.
