When news events occur that elicit immediate and urgent coverage, and are of such significance that it requires non-news programming to be interrupted for the report, it is referred to as breaking news. The break usually begins with a countdown sequence, or the network may simply pause its current national newscast to allow affiliate stations to switch to its feed. A special graphics package is then introduced, often overlaid with a distinct music cue. Until the advent of 24-hour news channels, this type of breaking news was normally reserved for very severe news events, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, for which newscast interruptions were used even during regular commercial breaks.
