Streaming news is a phenomenon that’s changing the way we receive news. In the past, news was delivered via radio or print, which remained stuck in time. These sources were limited by their location and the news sources they used.

Today, news is delivered on the viewer’s demand. Streaming networks repurpose programming from cable and broadcast to offer viewers news on demand. They also offer documentaries and news analysis.

Major news networks invested hundreds of millions of dollars in streaming operations. They hope that streaming will reduce the scarcity of news. The result is news that travels wherever the viewer goes. This is in contrast to broadcast and print, which have a limited audience.

When a story breaks, the network will interrupt the current programming to cover it. Often, they will have live anchors on hand. They may also pause to allow other network affiliates to join in on the feed. The network may then switch back to its program at the end of coverage.

The first breaking news to break was the assassination of John F. Kennedy. CBS News anchorman Walter Cronkite covered the event. It reflected crude technology of the time.

ABC’s April 2017 Shayrat missile strike interrupted a new episode of Scandal. At the time, NBC was covering the story with low-rated The Blacklist: Redemption in the Central time zone.

The CBS-owned local station in Pittsburgh piped coverage to streamers. The news was accompanied by four and a half-minute ad blocks featuring Liberty Mutual insurance and Humira.
