This type of news is typically delivered via a “Newsflash” or “Special report” graphic, as well as a distinct music cue. Historically, this type of news was limited to events that required nationwide coverage and a need for multiple stations to interrupt their programming at the same time, such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
In recent years, 24-hour news networks have begun to use special tickers for breaking stories during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for cut-ins.
