The traditional broadcast news business is struggling to stay afloat in the 21st century. TV audiences are shrinking as more people subscribe to streaming services. In 2015, cable TV subscribers accounted for 76 percent of total households, but that number will drop to 56 percent by 2021. Fox News Channel alone is losing around $20 per household per year due to these changes. But the digital age isn’t just hitting the news industry – eighty-five percent of U.S. households are currently subscribed to one or more streaming services.
Many major news networks have made large investments in streaming. While CNN+ failed to attract viewers, NBC News Now and Fox Nation have made significant investments. For example, Fox has attracted 1.5 million subscribers to its streaming app, and NBC News Now boasts that its subscribers watch 31 million hours of content every month. These major news networks are attempting to keep up with the competition.
In addition to providing free access to current events, these services are now delivering cable-quality news. With the rise of streaming video, networks can archive content and deliver it to viewers wherever they are. The best part is, these services are becoming increasingly ubiquitous. So, if you want to stay informed about what’s happening in the world, watch a streaming news channel.
CASE also produces award-winning publications, including newsletters, blogs and the award-winning magazine Currents. Faculty members are passionate about their work and the institutions they serve. They can be intimidated about fundraising, but development officers can help them become confident advocates for their institutions.
