Breaking News is a term used by television and radio networks to refer to an event that warrants the interruption of regular programming (or in the case of national network newscasts, of their affiliate stations’ regularly scheduled programs) for live coverage. The breaking story may last for a short period of time, or for several hours or days, depending on the event in question. The term may be used alongside other terms such as newsflash or special report. Before the advent of 24-hour news channels, such interruptions were usually limited to events with nationwide significance, such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and were accompanied by a special graphic or alert crawl.
Now, these interruptions are commonplace on the major network newscasts, and are often shortened, with a countdown sequence at the top of the hour overlaid in place of station imaging or a program reminder. In addition, many major network affiliates use special tickers to follow certain breaking stories during their regular newscasts, reducing the need for cut-ins.
