Trending is a live segment that updates viewers on what stories are getting the most attention. It’s a popular feature on newscasts, and it can also be used by sports broadcasters to highlight their latest scores or game results. In addition to breaking news, Trending segments also cover the latest in celebrity gossip, politics, weather, and more.
When an event occurs that a station considers to be “breaking news” and requires the interruption of current non-news programming (or, in the case of a national network, a regularly scheduled newscast), a special graphic will appear on screen, usually with a distinctive music cue. Lower thirds and other graphics may also be altered to convey a sense of urgency. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, breaking-news interruptions were rare, reserved for events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy, which prompted widespread nationwide coverage and required numerous stations to interrupt their regular schedules.
A massive winter storm is expected to drop up to 2 feet of snow in parts of New York City. Johannes Klaebo wins all six cross-country skiing events at the 2026 Olympics, surpassing Eric Heiden’s record.
