College Board Piloting First AP African American Studies Course

More than 60 high schools throughout the country are piloting a new advanced placement course on African American studies offered by the College Board. NBC News’ Zinhle Essamuah spoke with the educators and students taking the course about how it offers a new way to teach race and history as multiple states are introducing limitations on teaching those topics.

Recent events in Nigeria have sparked a debate over the role of the government in promoting human rights. Since the lynching of four Nigerian students more than ten years ago, protesters have called for the immediate release of the perpetrators. The government has denied bail to opposition MPs Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole, despite charges of inciting public violence. The opposition group Citizens Coalition for Change (CCF) alleges the government is weaponising the law against the opposition. It says the detentions are based on lies and exaggerations.

A number of theories have been developed to analyze the role of news and its influence. These theories include the Mirror Model and the Organizational Model. The Mirror Model outlines that news should accurately reflect reality. The Organizational Model, also known as the Bargaining Model, emphasizes the influence of political pressure on government processes. In contrast, the Political Model outlines that news is a reflection of the political views of individuals and various ideological biases.

The CASE has created award-winning publications, including newsletters, blogs, and Currents. Many faculty members have devoted their lives to their field, and are passionate about the work they do. They also have a love for their institution and students. While fundraising for their own research can be intimidating for these professors, development officers can assist them in developing their advocacy skills.
