A breaking news event is an urgently developing story of such a nature that it warrants interruption of non-news programming, or in the case of a major network, the regular program feed. This usually starts with a distinctive music cue and an alert graphic overlaid on the screen, indicating to viewers that normal station imaging will be suspended or replaced for the duration of the break. Often, networks will notify affiliates of the breaking news and ask them to stand by to join the special report or other live news coverage. Prior to 24-hour news channels, this was generally reserved for a limited number of events such as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, which elicited nationwide coverage that required multiple stations to interrupt their programming for a live report.
Other examples include the Nu’uanu Slide, a submarine landslide that split Oahu in two; and the Florida woman who became an internet celebrity for her booking photograph, and her pleas for help with her alleged murder suspect.
