During the primetime hour, breaking news can interrupt regular programming. Typically, a national network newscast will pause for a few seconds to give affiliates a chance to join the feed. The network may then switch back to the newscast when the coverage ends.
A similar procedure is used by local all-news radio stations. These stations are typically owned by CBS Radio or Audacy. They are structured in order to give viewers a sense of focus and attention.
When a breaking news story breaks, the anchor introduces the story. The story may be brief or it may be lengthy. The anchor may use music to emphasize the importance of the story. In some cases, the anchor may alter the lower thirds to convey a sense of urgency.
In other cases, the anchor may say that more details will be available on the local news station. This is typically done in the form of an outro promo that directs viewers to the local station’s website. The outro may also contain a link to a streaming news channel.
In other cases, the news may be sketchy. This is due to the limited amount of information available to the reporter at the time of the story.
A network may also integrate an analysis of the story into its programming. The anchor may then remind viewers that more details will be available on the local station’s evening newscast. The anchor may also offer a brief summary of the story, such as the name of the event, the location, and the cause.
