Breaking News is a segment of television and radio programming that focuses on breaking news events that may require stations to interrupt their regular, non-news programs for extended coverage. It is commonly aired in conjunction with an ongoing national network newscast, but may also be presented on its own. The breaking news story is typically introduced by a countdown sequence and a distinctive music cue that identifies the network on which the report is being presented. Then, a breaking news graphic and headline appears. The news anchor then presents the report on-air. This type of report is sometimes known as a “Newsflash” or “Special report.” It is also common for 24-hour news networks to use a special ticker during regularly scheduled programming, lessening the need for break-ins.
