About Trending
Breaking news is a television or radio segment that interrupts current non-news programming (and occasionally regular network newscasts) to cover an urgent or major news event. Such events typically require nationwide coverage, and may necessitate an interruption of all affiliated stations. Breaking news segments are typically introduced with a graphic and countdown sequence, with distinctive music cues to convey the urgency of the news event. Prior to the advent of 24-hour news networks, such break-ins were usually limited to extremely serious news events such as the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy, and were referred to as “Newsflash” or “Special Report”. More recent trends have seen the use of “breaking news” tickers during regularly scheduled programs, which can lessen the need for cut-ins.
