When a breaking news event occurs that requires the interruption of non-news programming (or, in some cases, even regular scheduled network newscasts), a national network will alert its affiliates and tell them to stand by for the break. A countdown sequence will then begin, allowing time for affiliated stations to switch to the network feed and join in on the coverage. This is known as a newsflash or special report and is often accompanied by a distinctive music cue.
