Current News (also known as Breaking news, late-breaking news or news flash) is the breaking of a significant story. It may be a major event, or one with less immediate impact but still relevant to viewers.

Usually an announcement is made that the network or local station will be covering the breaking news event. This may include an opening graphic, an introduction by the anchor or a live shot of a reporter in the field. This can also lead to lower thirds and graphics being reworked to emphasize the importance of the news.

Special coverage

When a breaking news event is occurring, the station or network will alert all its affiliates via an internal alert/message service. They will then switch to a reverse countdown to allow any affiliated stations to join the broadcast feed (in this way they can continue coverage of their regular evening newscast, rather than interrupting it to join a network newscast).

Replay

If the event is significant enough, the network or station will replay the breaking news segment and then resume normal programming. This could be done by joining in the middle of a current episode or by starting the program at the point where it was interrupted and then repeating the segment from there, depending on the length of the event.

The most important aspect of a breaking news segment is the amount of information that is relayed in the time available. While this can sometimes be sketchy in the early stages of a breaking news event, it is generally expected that more details will be reported later on. Often, this is reflected in the ending of the segment with a promo for viewers to check out the network’s website or sister stations and digital subchannels for more coverage of the event.
